Identification of Bioterrorism Agents: Wet Workshops

Hosted by the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa

Workshop Description

Join clinical laboratorians from across Iowa for hands-on practice in sentinel lab protocols to rule out potential agents of bioterrorism. The workshop will provide in-depth information and hands-on experience about specific select agents of bioterrorism. It is sponsored by the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) and offers both classroom lectures and laboratory demonstrations.

Target Audience

Microbiologists who are new to the clinical microbiology lab

Laboratorians who want to improve or retain proficiency with select agents

Laboratory managers


Identify the bacterial organisms designated as select agents and the necessary testing to rule out or refer.

Describe the etiology and clinical presentation of the bacterial select agents.

Determine the steps to perform when a select agent is suspected.

Demonstrate proficiency in the testing methods outlined in the Laboratory Response Network (LRN) sentinel level protocols.


Two identical, full-day workshops will be held in at the Iowa Laboratories Facility Conference Center in Ankeny (2240 South Ankeny Boulevard ). Each session is limited to 14 participants.Choose one session:

Session 1: Tuesday, March 3, 7:45 AM – 4:00 PM

Session 2: Wednesday, March 4, 7:45 AM – 4:00 PM

PACE Credits

The State Hygienic Laboratory is proud to offer PACE credits thanks to the Iowa Chapter of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS-IA). Arrangements for PACE credits are underway and it is estimated that 6.0 contact hours of continuing education credit will be offered to participants following this workshop.

Travel Accommodations

If you are traveling over 50 miles and need overnight accommodations, you must register by 5:00 PM CT on Friday, February14 to allow SHL sufficient time to reserve your hotel room at the Sleep Inn & Suites Hotel, 2406 SE Tones Drive, Ankeny, Iowa. You do not need to make the reservation or provide payment information; SHL will make all hotel reservations and payments. SHL will ensure that you receive reservation details in advance of your stay.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served as part of the workshop. Please indicate your travel accommodation needs during the online registration process.

8:30 - 9:15 AM Laboratory pre-test

9:15 - 10:30 AM Lectures (B.anthracis, Brucella spp., Y.pestis)

10:30 - 11:30 AM Laboratory demonstrations (B.anthracis, Brucella spp., Y.pestis)

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM Lectures (Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei)

12:00 - 1:00 PM Lunch catered at SHL

1:00 - 1:30 PM Lecture (F.tularensis)

1:30 - 2:30 PM Laboratory demonstrations (Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei, F.tularensis)

2:30 - 2:45 PM Break

2:45 - 3:45 PM Interactive unknowns in the laboratory

3:45 - 4:00 PM Post-test and closing remarks
