Ideals & Opportunity: The Bhakti Ethics of Purity and Utility @ DarshanRoom
Overview
What happens when moral idealism meets the messy reality of the world? Is purity of intention enough, or must one also learn the art of effectiveness? This presentation, Between Idealism and Opportunism: The Bhakti Ethics of Purity and Utility, explores how an ancient spiritual tradition wrestles with the tension between principle and practicality, inner conviction and outer success—and what that means for anyone seeking to live with purpose in today’s complex world.
Nityananda Chandra grew up in Honolulu and started his interest in Bhakti in 93’ when he was a young teen of 14. A young friend, Kalae, got him into visiting the local temple, reading bhakti books on reincarnation, and committing himself to sober living. Later in 99’ he joined an ashram as a monk and traveled from coast to coast of the US many times, both teaching Bhagavad Gita as well as studying. This included many trips to India to study and relish the beautiful culture. He has been married for over 20 years and has 3 kids. Nityananda Chandra, a GBC leadership college graduate, had diligently worked as the community director of the Dallas temple for 15 years and now serves at the Bhakti Center’s Soul Talks and Brooklyn temple’s The Darshan Room with teaching, organization, and guest services. He shares, “My joy in life is sharing bhakti with friends as well as teaching those who are new.”

How do you want to get there?
Kirtan & Dance in temple room
Get your dance on or just absorb yourself in the sacred space and atmosphere. The Darshan Room starts off in the temple room with the broader temple community with kirtan (mantra meditational chants & dance) and devotional dance. It is a powerful way to bring mind out of the busyness of NYC and enter the sacred atmosphere by engaging the mind, voice, and body.
The Darshan Room - Meditative kirtan & discourse held in Lotus Room downstairs
We have a variety of kirtan singers and guest educators who lead the wisdom talks. We conclude with a delicious and sacred vegetarian dinner that we serve to you.
