Progress and Pressure: Understanding economic and social change in England’s neighbourhoods
Join the Independent Commission on Neighbourhoods (ICON) to mark the launch of a new report, Progress and Pressure: Understanding economic and social change in England.
New research conducted for the report by ICON explores how and why some neighbourhoods in England have improved over the 21st century, while others have stagnated or declined.
As the government is exploring how to improve left behind places, the research examines what actually drives positive change – drawing on new evidence highlighting how placing trust and resource directly into the hands of local people can support real, meaningful improvements to communities.
To launch the report, ICON will be joined by:
- Baroness Hilary Armstrong, ICON Chair and former Cabinet Minister during the last Labour government.
- Professor David Halpern CBE, President Emeritus - Behavioural Insights Team and ICON Commissioner.
- Anoosh Chakelian, Britain Editor - New Statesman.
- Ross Mudie, report co-author and Head of Research Analysis - ICON.
