Event description

Description

For mixed race Irish people in reality our ancestry, our roots, our blood are Irish and we are proud of it.’

I Am Irish is a celebration of diversity. After a highly successful launch at the London Irish Centre in celebration of Black History Month October 2016 #IamIrish is spreading its wings and making its debut in Dublin with this impressive creative experience brought together in Axis Ballymun in celebration of Black History Month 2017.

On Wednesday October 25th, Lorraine and Axis hope to bring together a cross sector of voices and perspectives from across Irish communities to reflect together on the challenges faced in regards to race ,colour, culture and heritage in multicultural Ireland today. This event is FREE but booking is required. Just click the REGISTER button to the right.

Inspired by a persisting lack of representation of the Black Irish experience, Lorraine Maher launched the project #IAmIrish to celebrate Mixed race Irish people and to question the concept of ‘Irishness’ and what an authentic Irish identity means for Irish communities today.

Lorraine has collaborated with photographer Tracey Anderson to make an intimate study of the faces, lives and experiences of 24 mixed race Irish people. The exhibition will be complimented by a series of schools visits and conversations exploring how the world perceives Colour, Culture Identity and Heritage and the challenges we face in today’s society.

This project maps the roots, the lives and experiences of mixed race Irish people creating a unique opportunity to challenge perceptions of what it looks like to be Irish and open up people’s minds to the wonderful diversity of Irish people.

"As a mixed race creative Irish woman born to an Irish mother in the 60th growing up in Ireland. No Blacks No Dogs No Irish was the only explanation for my existence”

Lorraine and Axis are very grateful to The British Council and Dublin City Arts Office for their generous support in helping to make this exhibition and the important conversations that lie at its heart possible.
