Overview

Parties, Sexual Exploration, Doubts and Depression: ‘I’m Not Everything I Want to Be’ portrays the ‘Nan Goldin of Czechoslovakia’

I'm Not Everything I Want to Be / dir. Klára Tasovská / 2024 / documentary / Czechia, Slovakia, Austria / Czech with English subtitles / 90 minutes

After the Soviet invasion of Prague, young photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková strives to break free from the constraints of Czechoslovak normalization. Through thousands of intimate and subjective photographs, she embarks on a wild journey toward freedom and self-expression.

Czech filmmaker Klára Tasovská’s debut feature—premiered in the Panorama section of the 2024 Berlinale—is a formally inventive and deeply personal work. Created in close collaboration with Jarcovjáková and composed entirely of her photographs and diary entries, I’m Not Everything I Want to Be traces the artist’s search for identity and emotional truth, resulting in a profoundly affecting and inspiring film.

The award-winning documentary is also Czechia’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Awards.

Followed by a discussion with photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková, director Klára Tasovská, and producer Lukáš Kokeš, moderated by Kirsten Johnson.
