If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with cancer, you are faced with a series of decisions—decisions that may shape the course of your treatment and your life. The purpose of our Cancer Patient Lab Guide to Using AI in Your Cancer Decisions is to provide practical strategies to help guide you through those decisions using new AI tools.
Navigating complex cancer care—choosing tests, interpreting results, and planning treatment—can feel overwhelming for many patients and their loved ones. AI tools can help. “Dr. Google” is being replaced by AI tools such as ChatGPT to find and understand complex medical issues and treatments and navigate the health system with more clarity and confidence. With these tools you can:
- Ask questions to help you understand test results, testing and treatment options, basic biology, and your disease
- Translate complex medical jargon into language you can easily understand
- Summarize standard cancer care (e.g., NCCN, ESMO) guidelines to your specific situation
- Analyze your test results
- Suggest questions you should ask of your medical team
- Cross-check medical information
- Identify potential clinical trials
But few people have experience in using these AI tools for medical guidance. A framework and process are needed to provide education, guardrails, and ways to work with your medical team to ensure safe and effective use of these tools.
Building on the pioneering work of Russ Hollyer, who has used these tools for guiding his decisions for his prostate cancer care, a Cancer Patient Lab team, including Dr. Chris Apfel, Helen Connelly, and Brad Power, have been developing a guide to using AI for cancer care.
Please join this session to learn:
- Why you should use AI to gather ideas to bring to your medical team
- Principles for using AI tools
- A recommended workflow that you should follow
- Examples of prompts to get personalized information
