How to Succeed as an Environment Artist in Games
Overview
Join us on Friday, December 12th for a livestream-only event with Environment Artist Joshua Haun, discussing what it takes to build a successful career in game environment art. Joshua will share insights from his journey in architecture to creating environments for major titles like Call of Duty and VALORANT, and ultimately returning to Activision as an Expert Environment Artist.
With a foundation that includes a degree in architecture, ICAA certification, and hands-on work in Los Angeles’ historical architecture community, Joshua brings a perspective shaped by both classical theory and real-world design practice. He’ll discuss how that background informed his move into game development and how architectural thinking strengthens digital worldbuilding.
Joshua will also cover how environment art workflows have evolved, what studios look for in applicants, and the production habits that help artists advance early in their careers. He’ll share a behind-the-scenes look at personal projects such as his Harvey House, Noctambulent, and Victorian architecture studies, and how real-world design principles guide his digital environments.
Whether you're new to environment art or coming from an architectural background and exploring a transition into games, this event will highlight practical takeaways on interviewing, studio expectations, role progression, and the curiosity and research skills modern teams value. You’ll also see a brief Blender demo and have the chance to ask Joshua questions during our Q&A.
RSVP to reserve your spot and receive the livestream link on event day!
