About this event

Film & Media • Film

In 2024 I started some online workshops on writing and directing, and they proved very popular. I had loads of feedback from people saying how they had helped them shake something loose in their script/gave them more confidence ahead of setting foot on set of their next film, so here we are.

In this workshop, we'll focus on what can make your script better, from dialogue, exposition, tricks to deal with when you know it needs improving but don't know how to, and many more. I'll go through my process, and we'll also look at some written examples, specifically created for this workshop, so that you'll leave with a better understanding of how to apply the techniques to your own work.

I should point out, I use the same method for feature writing, only.... there's more of it! This workshop would also be useful if you're a filmmaker working on a feature script.

Throughout I will be referring to some of my short films as specific examples of where choices were made and to highlight the lessons involved. Links are below.

When you sign up you'll be given a bunch of materials, including both a good and bad version of 'The Lucky Horseshoe' - two scripts written as an exercise to rip into guilt-free. Afterwards, you'll get a copy of the presentation, a recording of the session as well as some extra follow-up materials.

At the end of the session is a Q&A where we can get as specific or as broad as you like when it comes to writing. After the session you get a recording of it, plus the presentation, and some other materials to help you on your way.

Who is Liam to lead such a workshop?

I was selected as one of the Screen Stars of Tomorrow 2025, and one of 15 filmmakers for the BFI Network@LFF cohort in 2024.

My last short Housewarming was BIFA nominated in 2024, and won Best UK Short at Raindance 2024. Barry Ward won Best Actor at Manchester Film Festival 2025.

My previous short, Punch-Drunk, was BAFTA-longlisted in 2022. I have a feature in development with Escape Plan (Love Lies Bleeding), and other projects, both short and feature, in development.
