How To Die In Japan is a laugh-out-loud exploration of culture shock, family chaos, and the bewildering rules for "passing on" in Japan. Miyo takes the audience on a journey through the rigid landscape of TPO (Time, Place, and Occasion), where navigating a simple funeral becomes a stressful—yet side-splitting—study in etiquette.

This personal and captivating performance contrasts the meticulous customs of Japan with the "casual chaos" of American life. It is a smart, deeply moving look at life, death, and identity—a reminder that your normal is not my normal.

Born and raised in Japan, Miyo is a dynamic storyteller, comedian, and show curator who blends humor and heart to explore identity, culture, and human connection. A Moth StorySLAM champion (and featured performer at the inaugural Moth LA StorySLAM Showcase in 2023), Miyo is also the Ojai Storytelling Festival Story Slam winner (2025) and a featured storyteller for the Storytelling Association of California's Showcase at the 2025 Bay Area Storytelling Festival. From solo shows to comedy stages, Miyo has performed all over Los Angeles and entertained audiences globally, delivering captivating performances that leave people laughing, reflecting, and seeing the world in new ways.

日本生まれ日本育ちのミヨは、ユーモアと温かさを織り交ぜながら、アイデンティティや文化、人と人とのつながりを描く、ダイナミックなストーリーテラー／コメディアン／ショーキュレーター。

Jane Morris / Director

Jane Morris is the Johnny Appleseed of comedy clubs, having opened the Chicago Comedy Showcase, the Second City ETC, Upfront Comedy, the Comedy Underground and currently managing the FanaticSalon in Culver City. She has most recently been seen in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shameless, I Am the Night, and opposite Meryl Streep in The Laundromat.

She teaches writing for performance workshops every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and performs live at the FanaticSalon on a very regular basis.

ジェーン・モリスは、数々のコメディクラブを世に広めてきた“コメディ界のジョニー・アップルシード”。シカゴ・コメディ・ショーケース、Second City ETC、Upfront Comedy、Comedy Underground を立ち上げ、現在はカルバーシティにある FanaticSalon の運営を手がけている。

Michael D. Mortilla / Composer & Musician

Michael D. Mortilla is an award winning composer and sound designer. His extensive work in New York theater and years working directly with Martha Graham informs his attention to narrative, movement, and expression. Largely self-taught, Michael received his teaching license from the City of New York Public Schools and was faculty/resident composer at UC Santa Barbara for 14 years. Mr. Mortilla regularly composes and performs for the Academy of Motion Pictures. Other commissions are from Sony/Columbia Pictures, The Chicago Symphony, the Olympics, the National Film Preservation Foundation, Severin Films, and others.

マイケル・D・モーティラ（Michael D. Mortilla）は、数々の受賞歴を誇る作曲家兼サウンドデザイナー。ニューヨークの演劇界での幅広い活動や、伝説的な舞踊家マーサ・グレアムと長年直接共に働いた経験から、彼の作品は常に物語性、身体の動き、そして表現力に対して深い洞察に満ちている。

独学で音楽を学んだマイケルは、ニューヨーク市立公立学校で教員免許を取得。その後、カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校（UCSB）にて14年間にわたり教職員およびレジデント・コンポーザー（専属作曲家）を務めた。

現在は、映画芸術科学アカデミー（アカデミー賞主催団体）のイベントにおいて定期的に作曲と演奏を担当している。また、ソニー/コロンビア・ピクチャーズ、シカゴ交響楽団、オリンピック、アメリカ国立映画保存財団、セヴェリン・フィルムズなど、多方面から数多くの委託を受け、作品を提供。

Marlene Ondrea Nichols / Creative Dramaturg & Performance Advisor

Writer, Producer, Scholar. Named after the transgressive actress Marlene Dietrich. Raised in the Tennessee Williams South. New Yorker at heart, Angeleno by fate, she has performer her original works on both coasts, Minneapolis, Paris, and the Arctic Circle.
