How to Avoid A Very Censored Holiday
Overview
The holidays are a time for families to come together and celebrate. In theory, it is a time of rejoicing and connection. But what happens when your uncle says something painful or ignorant about trans people at the holiday table and you’re exploring your gender identity? This scenario that occurs so often during this familial holiday can induce anxiety, sadness, and even fear for many individuals returning home. It can also evoke similar feelings in parents and family members if they don’t understand how to approach these conversations. The critical question is: how can we limit censorship of these conversations about the people we love? Showing up for your family and friends this holiday season is an integral part of lowering the risks associated with self-censorship and building community with those you love and care about. We’ll explore all of this and more with our expert panel during this month’s Censorship Series program.
