How Not to Die!
Common Backcountry Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The sun’s out, the trails are calling, and it’s the perfect time to get outside. But even in the best conditions, small mistakes can turn into big emergencies — fast.
Join King County Explorer Search and Rescue veteran Tony Banic for a storytelling-packed class that could literally save your life. Tony will share four real-life rescue missions from the field — and invite YOU to guess: Did this one have a happy ending... or not?
These are true stories from the SAR front lines, and each one reveals common mistakes that hikers and backpackers make — and how easily they could have been prevented.
Whether you’re planning a summit attempt, a long summer backpacking trip, or a quick day hike after work, this class will equip you with the tools to stay safe, get home, and avoid becoming Tony’s next mission.
What to Expect:
- Four True Stories of Misadventures: Hear real life stories of backcountry rescues and learn how you can avoid similar fates.
- What to do if something goes wrong: How to contact Search and Rescue (SAR) and provide the information they need to help you.
- Expert Advice and Essentials: Gain insights from a seasoned SAR professional and learn what you should carry for an unexpected night outdoors
- Inside Search and Rescue: Get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into a rescue mission.
- Interactive Q&A: Have your questions answered by Search and Rescue.
This class is perfect for all experience levels. If you go outside, this is for you.
