Feminist icon Gloria Steinem contended that the National Women's Conference of 1977 was "the most important event nobody knows about."
Come join the Center for Public History, Houston History magazine and the Sharing Stories from 1977 project for a magazine launch event and panel discussion to talk about just how important that 1977 National Women's Conference was.
This special issue of Houston History is dedicated to highlighting the people who made the National Women's Conference in Houston happen. Produced in collaboration with the UH Sharing Stories from 1977 team with funding from the Summerlee Foundation, the magazine allows readers to travel back in time nearly 50 years and experience something of the of the strength and excitement of those gathered at the conference.
Through photographs, archival materials, and personality profiles, the articles in Houston History provides a glimpse into the tension-filled back rooms where volunteers frantically prepared for the thousands of people pouring into the city’s hotels and convention center, as well as unique insight on the conference leaders, the incredible diversity of women in attendance, and the broad array of the needs and issues they championed.
Among the articles featured in this issue:
"Why Houston? How the Women’s Conference Came to the Bayou City," written by Dr. Caitlyn Jones
"Making Houston Happen: Local Organizers and the Planning of the NWC," written by Maya Bouchebl, UH Public History graduate student
