The award-winning documentary Hong Kong – Final Days of Freedom explores Hong Kong’s ongoing battle for democracy, as it fights against the Chinese Communist Party for freedom. The film includes interviews with pro-democracy protestors, activists, and academics, who shed light on the struggle for universal suffrage and the human rights violations that have occurred in Hong Kong. The documentary also delves into the impact of the Tiananmen Square massacre on Hong Kong, and how it created fear leading up to the 1997 handover of the territory from British to Chinese control. The film chronicles the continued resistance of Hong Kongers against Beijing’s authoritarianism, including movements such as the Umbrella Movement, Demosisto, and Scholarism. It also discusses the massive public opposition in 2019 to a proposed extradition bill, which led to millions taking to the streets. The documentary explores how the city’s freedoms and civil liberties, including freedom of speech, right to assemble, freedom of the press, and public dissent, have been curtailed by the Chinese Communist Party’s implementation of a new National Security Law. Additionally, the film features interviews with democratic and republican politicians who discuss the transformation of this international business hub into a Chinese-controlled police state following the imposition of the National Security Law.
