Hit Me Up: Tie Me Down - Ropes 101

Welcome to the world of rope! We'll lead you through all you need to know to get started your rope journey. After an in-depth chat about safety considerations and precautions for tying, we will dive into getting all bound up. By the end of the night you will know a proper single column tie, munter hitches, reverse tensions, hojo cuffs, how to add rope, and how to store your rope. You’ll practice improvising your own ties by combining these building blocks. There will be lots of hands-on help to make sure everything clicks and you go home knowing a few new tricks. There are no prerequisites for this class! You can come with a partner or come alone. Self tying is possible with most of what we will cover. If you have rope, bring 2 hanks and safety shears. There will be rope to share, and some jute rope to purchase for $12 a hank.

About the Instructor

Salem X is a queer, nonbinary pro-domme and rope artist/educator/performer. They started tying in 2021 and fell in love with it! Salem has garnered attention nationally and internationally for their work as a performer. In NYC, they’ve performed and house-topped at events like House of Love, City of Gods, Feral, Bruise, and SuciaQueer. In September 2024 they performed at Folsom Street Fair and Twisted Windows in San Francisco. In February 2025 they reprised their Twisted Windows performance for Karada House’s virtual Queerope. Salem loves the connective and adaptable nature of rope. They are passionate about rope spaces that center marginalized folks and their experiences, which led them to co-found T4T Jam, a trans rope jam in Brooklyn. Salem teaches rope in both class and private settings. Their approach to rope education emphasizes risk awareness, consent, and tying in a way that feels organic and connective rather than prescribed and pattern-based. salemthesadist.com
