The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. is proud to present History in Our Hands: Community Archiving Workshops 101, a hands-on educational workgroup designed to share proper archival practices and effective methods for preserving historical materials. Created for local organizations including churches, sororities, fraternities, and community groups, the 2-hour sessions will provide information and tools to help ensure that our shared stories and legacies are protected for future generations.


What You Will Learn:

· Overview of archival science fundamentals and best practices

· How to organize, store, and protect documents, photographs, and memorabilia

· Techniques for handling fragile materials

· Strategies for developing and maintaining your own organizational archives

· Guidance on documenting and sharing your group’s unique history


Workshop Results:

· Strengthened relationships among community organizations

· Increased awareness and understanding of preservation practices

· An empowered community equipped to maintain and celebrate its own historical records

· Opportunities to contribute to the broader digital archives of South Florida’s Black history


Each participant will receive (1) comprehensive starter kit to support their archival journey. Up to two (2) organization members may attend workshop, per registration fee.


$85 Registration Fee Includes:

· 1 letter-size document case

· 25 letter-size reinforced file folders

· 1 clippings envelope (9”W x 12”H)

· 1 pair of disposable cotton gloves

· 1 sheet of six box labels

· 2 archival polyester stock certificate L-sleeves

· Plastic paper clips

· 1 notebook/pencil

· 1 tote bag


Who Should Attend:

· Church leaders, family historians, chapter historians and officers of sororities, fraternities, alumni associations, and community organizations.

· Anyone interested in preserving the history and legacy of their group or family
