Commemorating the Past While Celebrating the Future: Historical Reflections & Language Development in the United States (II)

Time/Date: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2025

Location: U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou, American Center

Explore the vibrant, complex, and evolving story of the continuing American experiment. These engaging seminars will offer a comprehensive platform to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of two and a half centuries of U.S. history, from its foundational ideals to its ongoing challenges. We will reflect on the enduring principles of liberty and self-governance while confronting the difficult tests that continually test the nation's promise. Simultaneously, these workshops will serve a dual educational purpose: They are specifically designed to enhance your English language proficiency across reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as critical thinking, preparing all involved to be a more informed and active participant in our burgeoning global society.

🕥 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | The Declaration of Independence

Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

The Declaration of Independence did more than sever ties with Great Britain - it redefined the role of government. Join us as we dive into the Enlightenment principles that power this historic document, from natural rights to popular sovereignty. We will go beyond the text to explore how these ideals laid the foundation for the United States and sparked quests for self-determination across the globe.

🍴 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. | Lunch Break

🗽 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | The Sound of Freedom: How American Speech Shaped History and Global Dialogue

Doors open: 1:30 p.m.

Language does more than communicate; it ignites. This workshop explores the "Sound of Freedom," tracing how the distinct cadence of American speech has traveled beyond our borders to spark inspiration worldwide. We will examine the vital role of language in shaping history, offering teachers a fresh perspective on how to present these classic texts as living, breathing catalysts for global change.
