Event description

Description

In recent years we’ve come to realize that some of the ways that people and churches have intended to help those in poverty have been more harmful than helpful. Yet we are still called to love our neighbors locally and globally.

What, then, are we all to do?

In this interactive workshop we will hear stories from practitioners, best practices from each other, and be inspired to confidently partner both locally and globally in a way that provides hope instead of unintended harm.

Facilitators will talk through some of the helping-without-hurting tensions using concepts from the book When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself. Together audience members will wrestle with what it means to be more like Christ as we respond to injustice in our world. Facilitators will illustrate how food banks, deacon funds, short-term service trips, and other outreach activities can be more effective and meaningful.

The Helping that Helps workshop will be held on Monday, April 15th from 7-9 PM in the second floor Learning Center of The Well, located at 419 E Oskaloosa Street in Pella, Iowa. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Please call 641-621-0164 ext 706 to reserve a spot or register through Eventbrite, as space is limited. When attending, enter The Well east door and follow the signs.
