When clients are exposed to environments that negatively judge or mistreat them due to the racial or cultural backgrounds, it can make authentic self-expression very challenging. Such environments can cause negative self-beliefs to grow, intensify emotional distresses when in these social settings, and even disrupt client’s ability to achieve personal goals. This training reviews how adaptations to CBT interventions (e.g., mindfulness, cognitive coping, and activity scheduling) can be used to help clients of color strengthen their self-love, self-confidence, and overall cultural pride.

Objectives: Attendees who participate in this training will:

  • Utilize strategies for creatively and flexibly assessing the thoughts and feelings clients have towards their racial and cultural backgrounds,

  • Learn how to implement evidence-based interventions to help clients grow and maintain positive and affirming thoughts about their racial and cultural backgrounds.
