"Help! My Vagina is Trying to Kill Me!" is a comedic solo show, telling stories and jokes about...you guessed it, vaginas. Or uteruses - whatever. Point is, it sounds better using the word "vagina."
Yola Jean Lu, a comedian, filmmaker and actress based out of Austin, TX, had a mini breakdown when she was told after a routine pap smear that she has HPV. It was then she thought to herself, "oh wow, my vagina is actually trying to kill me." Because this was the 3rd strike. Yola had already dealt with some issues with her vagina - from getting diagnosed with HSV2 over a decade ago, to experiencing an incredibly painful miscarriage, Yola recounts all of the specific moments where her vagina has tried killing her. Part storytelling, part standup comedy - Yola presents a show that is full of honesty and vulnerability, but still making it "fun" and approachable with a ton of jokes.
Yola made a show that she wished existed when she was experiencing all of these things so she would feel less alone (she didn't really know how to use Reddit at the time. Honestly, still doesn't).
This show premiered at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and received glowing audience reviews, and then a snippet of the show went on to win the 2025 Frontera Fest "Best of Fest." The show was then offered a 5 week, 15 show run produced by Hyde Park Theatre.
