Overview

Presenter: Jacky Howell

Workshop Description
“Young children often communicate their needs through behavior long before they have the words to explain how they feel. This workshop explores the essential role of co-regulation in helping children develop the foundation for self-regulation.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how brain development, relationships, and environment influence a child’s ability to manage emotions, attention, and behavior. Through real-life scenarios, hands-on strategies, and reflective discussion, educators will leave with practical tools they can immediately use in classrooms and care settings. Emphasis will be placed on responsive interactions, supportive routines, calming strategies, and adult self-regulation—because regulated adults help create regulated children.”

Learning Outcomes (List 2-3 concepts participants will learn by attending this training)

1. Differentiate between co-regulation and self-regulation and describe their roles in early childhood development.

2. Identify when children are NOT regulated and interpret young children’s behavior as communication of needs.

3. Apply developmentally appropriate co-regulation strategies to support children during daily routines, transitions, and challenging moments.

4. Design classroom environments and adult responses that intentionally promote emotional regulation and resilience.
