Help Design a National Survey of Public Defenders (Session 1 of 3)

Webinar Faculty: Andy Davies, Director of Research, New York Office of Indigent Legal Services & Heather H. Hall, Development & Engagement Director, NAPD

About the Webinar: NAPD is partnering with the Urban Institute and the Indigent Defense Research Association (IDRA) on a BJS-funded project to design and pilot a first-of-its-kind survey of public defenders in the United States. This survey is unique in that it is truly being designed by line defenders and public defender leaders. We, including our two defender PI’s (Andy Davies and Heather H. Hall), our 4 defender-researcher consultants (Jonah Siegel, Margaret Gressens, Meg Ledyard and Erik Stilling), our 12-defender expert advisory panel, and Silicon Valley De-Bug’s mobilized community, want to make sure that the survey reflects defenders’ research interests and collects reliable information on areas such as attorney experience, training, workload, use of support staff, client and case attributes, and quality of representation. We also want to know what questions we should include in the survey, how to make participation in the survey appealing, and what kinds of comparisons and analysis would be most helpful. As you can see, we need your help! During this webinar, which will be held three times in January 2017, you will be asked to recommend what questions the survey should include. What do you want to know about public defenders across the country? What are the major issues that you want covered? The webinar will use an online procedure known as ‘Group Level Assessment’ where persons participating will be able to type their questions on the screen for others to see, and then assist in organizing them into groups and prioritizing them. We will take that feedback, design the survey, and pilot it in several jurisdictions across the country. If you aren’t able to attend the webinar, please consider leaving your feedback at the form found at this link instead: All responses are to the survey and the webinar sessions are anonymous. Please note this January 9 webinar will focus on representation of ADULT defendants at the STATE court level. The webinar is free and open to any attorney representing an indigent person accused of crime or in a delinquency proceeding. Registration will be capped.
