About this event

  • Event lasts 9 hours

This intensive 8-hour training is the result of years of learning, overcoming challenges, and refining hydraulic modeling techniques delivered to you in a streamlined, easy-to-follow format. Skip the frustration of piecing together knowledge from scattered online sources. Instead, gain practical expertise to develop HEC-RAS 2D models for real-world projects with confidence.

What sets this course apart?

  • Personalized support with a 1-hour consultation with the instructor.
  • Exclusive resources including a curated list of over 100 recommended resources to continue enhancing your skills.
  • A QA/QC checklist to help you deliver robust, technically sound models to your clients.

What is included?

This workshop includes:

(1) Eight (8) hours of live instruction over a video call. The live portion of the course will be comprised of PowerPoint presentations (which will be provided to students), demonstrations of the program where students are encouraged to follow along on their machine, and several opportunities to ask questions.

(2) One (1) hour of one-on-one consulting/HEC-RAS assistance with the instructor to further master HEC-RAS skills.

(3) Access to all of the PowerPoints covered during the live instruction portion of the course.

(4) A resource guide with over 100 helpful links to tutorials and resources.

(5) A comprehensive QA/QC checklist to optimize project efficiency and ensure you are providing a model that will impress even the most difficult reviewer.

Topics

  • 2D flow theory - an overview of the calculations used "under the hood" of the program.
  • Terrain data and terrain modifications
  • RAS Mapper
  • Entering flow data
  • Bridge modeling
  • Computation settings and tolerances
  • Advanced topics - rain-on grid modeling, floodway mapping in 2D, dam breach modeling, and pipe networks
  • An overview of RAS 2025 Alpha
  • BONUS: A discussion of how AI can be used to optimize HEC-RAS models (guest speaker)

About the Instructor

Hi! My name is Paige Brue, and I am a civil engineer specializing in floodplain mapping, stormwater management, and land development. My career journey in water resources began through my involvement with the FFA and the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation Youth Board in high school. When my hometown (Franklin, Indiana) experienced a devastating flood in June of 2008, I knew that I wanted a career dedicated to minimizing the impact of similar large flood events in the future. When I graduated with my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, I began my career in consulting. Throughout my career, I have used HEC-RAS for numerous projects. In November 2023, I took a leap and started Surf City Hydraulic Engineering where I continue to combine my technical skills with my love for hydraulic modeling. If you are a fellow "water geek" like me and want to dive deeper into HEC-RAS 2D modeling, I would love for you to join me for this training!

Frequently asked questions

Who should attend?

This course is intended for engineers, planners, scientists, and water resource professionals with a background in hydrology and hydraulics. Participants should have experience with 1D steady-flow modeling using HEC-RAS. All example models in this course will be presented in U.S. Customary Units.

What is the refund policy?

The registration fee for the workshop will be fully refunded if canceled earlier than 7 days before the training. Registration fees will be 50% refunded if the participant cancels 3-6 days before the live workshop. No refunds will be provided for cancelations within 2 days of the training.

How does this training work?

This live instruction portion of the workshop will be delivered online using Google Meet. After placing an order, you will receive an email from the instructor. I will send the email within 1-2 business days with further instructions about the workshop and a calendar meeting invitation.

Organized by

With over a decade of hands-on experience using HEC-RAS, I, the founder of Surf City Hydraulic Engineering, has dedicated countless hours exploring every tutorial available, studying the HEC-RAS User’s Manual, and dissecting blog posts. I understand how challenging to carve out time for skill development as a busy professional. However, if you are looking for a competitive edge and are eager to fast-track your career, you have come to the right place. HEC-RAS has changed dramatically since it first became available by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in 1995. Since that time, the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) has published numerous updated versions of the program that include new features and fix bugs. One notable feature is the two-dimensional (2D) modeling capability added to HEC-RAS version 5.7 in 2015. As the software continues to improve, 2D hydraulic modeling is a skill that will grow in demand due to its ability to represent complex flow patterns. FEMA has even published guidance for using HEC-RAS 2D to map floodways. It is clear that 2D hydraulic modeling is not going anywhere, and now is a great time to learn this skill! Spots are limited, so sign up now!
