About this event

DESCRIPTION: Health literacy describes the knowledge and skills associated with finding, understanding, and using information to improve personal health and to navigate health systems. This free educational activity is designed to provide health care professionals at SF Department of Public Health with competencies and best practices they can use to foster health literacy among patients and promote organizational health literacy where they practice and provide services.

OBJECTIVES

1. Define literacy and health literacy and cite link between health literacy, equity, and health outcomes.

2. Recognize literacy demands in health and health care among the patients and communities for whom they provide care and services.

3. Identify the role of organizational health literacy in meeting the needs of patients and communities.

4. Demonstrate the application of Plain Language in verbal and written communication.

5. Utilize AI best practices to draft text for verbal and written communication.

6. Demonstrate how to use Readability Formulas to evaluate text in patient- and public-facing communication.

7. Articulate how utilizing learned strategies to promote personal and organizational health literacy can contribute to the advancement of health equity.

8. Describe 3 ways this educational activity can be applied to their professional practice.

How does health literacy relate to healthcare equity?

Don't take our word for it. “Achieving health and well-being requires eliminating health disparities, achieving health equity, and attaining health literacy” (HHS, Healthy People 2030). "Health literacy is a key component in reducing health disparities and increasing health equity"(IOM, 2010).

Who is the target audience for this course?

Anyone whose role includes communicating with patients and their support persons (e.g., patient assessments, patient and family teaching, discharge instructions, counseling/coaching, etc.). Anyone who produces written or graphic content for patients (e.g., websites, print materials, etc.).

Are CEs provided for participants?

Yes, this course has been approved for 7 (seven) contact hours. ZSFG is an approved provider for California Board of Registered Nursing, Physical Therapy Board of California, and Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers of California.

Why aren't continuing education credits granted for my profession?

The Continuing Education (CE) Program at ZSFG DET relies on the partnership of subject matter experts (SMEs) to assist us in becoming approved for other disciplines. Email ZSFG.CE@sfdph.org if you're interested in partnering with DET as a CE SME for your profession.

Are Equity Learning Units provided for this course?

Participants receive 4 Equity Learning Units for completing this course. This fulfills the annual DPH Equity Learning Requirements.

Is this course available to persons outside SF DPH and UCSF?

No. This course is provided free of charge for SF DPH personnel and providers as well as UCSF personnel and providers at ZSFG.

Is lunch provided?

No, lunch is not provided. There will be a lunch break for participants.
