Overview:

Trauma, if unresolved, will continue to produce symptoms that impair our relationships and life itself. And trauma, especially childhood trauma, does not have to be extreme to leave a negative impact. Healing trauma is probably the single most important issue for successfully reaching therapeutic goals. Trauma does not heal on its own, nor does the body or psyche forget about it. Unresolved trauma unconsciously generates more trauma. Life script decisions and core beliefs are often imbedded in our psyche in midst of a trauma. Even traumas we are not aware of get re-enacted in our adult lives. The impact of cultural scripting will be discussed as an example of the latter.

In this workshop, three transactional analysis practitioners will present types of traumas, possible responses to it and how to treat it:

  • Dr. Brenda Schaeffer will identify Four Types of Trauma and Trauma Responses.
  • Dr. Vann Joines will present Treating Trauma with Trauma Resolution Energy Therapy.
  • Dr Valerie Batts will share How Racial/Ethnic Identity Formation Creates Trauma.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Identify four types of trauma
  • List specific responses to trauma
  • Explain the correlation of script decisions and trauma
  • Describe how trauma resolution energy therapy heals trauma
  • Identify how cultural messages create trauma

Dr. Valerie Batts is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been providing culturally informed psychotherapy since 1984. She is known for her compassionate yet action-oriented approach. Dr. Batts invites her clients to understand themselves as cultural beings and how that reality impacts their presenting problem. While in treatment, she helps her clients uncover the links between personal dis-ease and the context in which they live and/or work. In this process, exploration of how the client’s life has been impacted by trauma becomes salient.

Dr. Batts earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University, focusing on psychophysiology and race relations. She also holds an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from a joint program between Lone Mountain College and the Southeast Institute, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
