HazMat Technician 470 – Hybrid Certification Course
The HazMat Technician 470 program is an advanced, hybrid training course designed to prepare emergency responders to analyze, plan, and implement offensive strategies at hazardous materials incidents. This course builds on the foundation established in HazMat Operations 470 (required prerequisite) and provides an in-depth, hands-on learning experience aligned with NFPA 470 standards.
Participants will begin with self-paced online modules, covering advanced topics such as:
- Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards
- Air monitoring and detection equipment
- Hazard and risk assessment
- Advanced product control and leak sealing
- Tactical decision-making and incident action planning
- Specialized PPE and decontamination procedures
After completing the online portion, students will participate in a three-day in-person skills weekend, taking place July 25-27. During this immersive training, participants will work alongside experienced instructors, demonstrating their proficiency in:
- Advanced leak control and mitigation tactics
- Air monitoring and interpreting detection results
- Hazardous materials sampling and identification
- Implementing complex decontamination operations
- Coordinating multi-agency responses within the Incident Command System
This hands-on component ensures that responders are fully prepared to safely and effectively manage hazardous materials incidents, utilizing the latest tools, techniques, and strategies to protect the public, the environment, and fellow responders.
