Harnessing the Power of an Open Source Design Process

Have you ever thought about how you can encourage openness in your design process, to collaboratively foster fresh and innovative outcomes, without losing sight of the intentions of your design? Curious on how the sum being greater than the parts can elevate your UX design?

Join me to learn what an open source design community is, how it’s useful and what it means to contribute to a design community.

This presentation will explore the challenges and advantages of designing in the open. It will demonstrate how the open source design process works: how to be transparent and inclusive within an open design community, while still being able to achieve the intent of the design. We'll address how to scale design solutions for technologies and reconcile for consistency, across multiple implementations, to meet the demands of an open source community.

Monica Granfield

Monica Granfield is a career UX professional who has provided design leadership for large scale companies, such as Microsoft, Oracle and Hewlett Packard, to small emerging startups. She has also provided UX design + strategy to a variety of vertical markets, as an independent consultant, delivering innovative, thoughtful, useable and successful products, to users around the world. Monica is currently providing design leadership to the RedHat Open Source community for the PatternFly UI framework.

Parking and Directions

Arriving at Staples (500 Staples Drive, Framingham, MA 01702)

Once turning off Crossing Boulevard onto Staples Drive, continue straight through the stop sign. You will see the flag poles to your left – this is the main entrance. There are limited visitors’ spots to the left and more on the right side of the road. If all the visitors’ spots are full, you may continue along the road to the other parking lot and park in any unmarked spot. But, you must return to the flagpoles to enter.

Getting to Staples

From the East and West

• Mass Pike to Exit 12 - The Framingham Route 9 exit
• Route 9W (bear left)
• Follow ramp until it merges with Route 9W.
• Merge into the left lane.
• After the traffic light you will see a left hand exit ramp – Crossing Blvd. Take this exit. It will take you over Route 9.
• At the top of the ramp is a traffic light. Make a left turn.
• Follow the road around and through the stop sign until you see the signs for “Visitor Parking” directly in front of the Main Entrance (marked by tall flag poles). If the visitor parking is full, use any of the side lots available or the parking garage – but you must enter from the Main Entrance.

From the North & South

• Take I-495 N or S.
• Merge onto MA-9 E/Turnpike Road via Exit 23A toward Framingham.
• Turn right onto Crossing Boulevard.
• Turn right onto Staples Drive.
• Follow the road around and through the stop sign until you see the signs for “Visitor Parking” directly in front of the Main Entrance (marked by tall flag poles). If the visitor parking is full, use any of the side lots available or the parking garage – but you must enter from the Main Entrance.

Public Transportation

Staples is a stop on route 7 and route 9 of the Metrowest Regional Transit Authority. http://mwrta.com/download_file/view_inline/167 The 7 route requires a transfer from the Framingham commuter rail station (Worcester line).
