Event description

Description

The long history of Korean papermaking and paper culture began early in the first millennium. The botanical perspective begins with the paper mulberry tree, native to East Asia, which made it possible to make strong Korean paper, known today as Hanji. An historical overview will cover the paper's route from China to Korea and how it developed as Buddhism spread through East Asia.

Join the University of Chicago's Center for East Asia Studies as we welcome Aimee Lee, Artist, Papermaker, Writer, and Leading Hanji Researcher and Practitioner in North America. Aimee graduated with a B.A. from Oberlin College and a MFA from Columbia College here in Chicago. Her Fulbright research on Korean paper led to her award-winning book, Hanji Unfurled (The Legacy Press) and the first-ever American hanji studio, located in Cleveland, Ohio. She teaches, lectures, exhibits, and is collected internationally.

This special program, hosted on the University of Chicago campus, will begin with a lecture on the history of hanji, followed by a hands-on workshop with Aimee where she will focus on joomchi which involves texturing and fusing hanji.

This program is FREE and open to the public with registration being REQUIRED to attend. Registration will close on Friday, October 26th. Lunch will be provided to all registered attendees.

NOTE: Due to a limited number of spots and a high volume of interest for the workshop component of the program, a waitlist was implemented. Please check your ticket type. If a spot to participate in the workshop becomes available and you are next in line on the waitlist, you will be notified by email from a Center for East Asian Studies staff member.

This program is sponsored by The Hanji Society of Chicago and the University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies with support from a Title VI National Resource Center grant from the United States Department of Education.
