Hand Lettering for Visual Practitioners :: A 2-day Workshop
Sat, Apr 29, 2017, 10:00 AM – Sun, Apr 30, 2017, 4:00 PM PDT
This two-day lettering workshop is designed for the beginning and seasoned graphic recorder or meeting facilitator looking to improve their lettering skills and increase competence when working live at the wall. Participants will experience a series of hands-on, deep-dive lettering activities that will boost self-confidence and expand their lettering practice. While there will be a lot of information shared, participants will have time to explore each of the techniques presented.
Building on a foundation of form
When it comes to lettering, you can study form, and you can study rhythm, but you can’t learn both simultaneously. We will set a foundation by exploring the three speeds of lettering, mental preparation, the anatomy of a marker tip, and body mechanics while focusing on writing for legibility and speed.
Building a foundation of form, we will leverage Neuland markers to answer the question: “What is this tool designed for and what else can it do?” Demos and exemplars will be offered with time to practice and receive feedback from other participants and the instructor.
By exploring the AWARE model through a guided visualization, participants will be equipped to recognize and resource any triggers or concerns that come up while working at the wall. The results of this experiential include increased awareness and confidence.
Lettering hierarchy and chart titles
As a graphic recorder working on paper, you’ve got one chance to capture “key knowledge nuggets” or quotes from the speaker. Knowing the basics of composition and a lettering hierarchy will help you capture the essence of messages on the fly.
Lettering artists often sketch out variations to work out designs. We will practice these techniques to serve as a reference for when we get to the wall.
When prepping for an upcoming gig, do you plan your charts ahead or time or just roll in and go? One thing you can prepare for and wow your audience with is the title of your charts.
Taking it to the next level
We will take it to the next level by learning the tradecraft of identifying the tools and techniques necessary to mimic and improve on benchmarked lettering styles.
As if learning new tricks wasn’t enough, participants will walk away with a plethora of resources, customized practice book, Neuland markers and secrets to making lasting lettering improvements—ways to continually take your lettering to the next level.
All necessary lettering supplies will be provided to complete the activities. In addition, students will be asked to bring the following:
- Sketchbook and favorite markers to practice with and to take notes.
- Benchmarks: samples of work you like and would like to learn how they were created.
- Favorite word or short quote (3-7 words).
We will work both on desktop and large at the wall. Paper and “community” markers will be provided. You are also welcome to bring your own markers and supplies. If interest and time permits digitization of lettering, exploration into calligraphy and sign painting techniques, and monetizing your lettering skills can be covered.
Light refreshments will be provided. There are several places in near Artstarts to grab a bite during lunch and before or after class.
Lefties are welcome!
And to those to attend this workshop, the learning never ends. Participants are welcome to reach out to the instructor anytime for feedback.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
No ID is required. However, it is suggested that participants be adults who are amateur or professional visual practitioners.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
