Event description

Description

Families or children will be invited to join forces in pairs or teams to find natural and man-made features in the landscape using grid references and the four cardinal directions. There may even be a letterbox or two to find along the way! A photo on their phone (or yours!) will be proof that the object has been located. And each object found will piece together to solve a picture puzzle.

Join us for a fun and active morning where children will be encouraged to work without direct supervision, giving them a sense of independence and adventure.

Map reading is a life-long skill that can be applied to walking, running, or just enjoying the great outdoors together. (It also helps once you’re old enough to drive a car too!)

Recommended age-range: 8-12 years old. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Level: 1 out of 3. The pace will be gentle but you and your children must be comfortable walking approximately 1 mile for 2.5 hours on the moor, in a woodland, and near a river.

What to bring/wear: Sturdy and waterproof walking boots/shoes/wellies. Plenty of warm layers including gloves and hat. Waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast). Lunch, snacks, and hot drinks/flask.

If you have them, please also bring a map (OL28 Ordnance Survey map of Dartmoor) and a compass. (Silva is recommended and a good source of compasses e.g.: Dash4it.co.uk www.dash4it.co.uk/accessories/accessory-type/compasses.html Any of the following would be fine: Silva Starter 8; Silva Field; Silva Ranger; Silva Expedition 4.) Don’t worry if you don’t have them, we will have map copies and a few spare compasses.

Location: Haytor Visitor Centre Car Park, TQ13 9XT, 3 miles west of Bovey Tracey (don't rely on sat nav for exact location). Directions http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/enjoy-dartmoor/planning-your-visit/virtual-visitor-centre/haytor-visitor-centre

Price & Booking: £10 per child. Group size is limited so pre-booking is essential.

Cancellation: The walk will go ahead come rain or shine. It will be postponed if we consider the weather too dangerous for children (please check your emails 12-24 hours beforehand). Sorry no refunds if you’re unable to attend.

Photographs: We would like to take photographs of the day to share with you and our Dartmoor’s Daughter community on Facebook/Website. Please let us know if you prefer not to have your or your children’s photograph taken.

Risk: No liability accepted for accidents or incidents.
