AI-Assisted Chatbots to Improve Access and Engagement in Mental Health Care

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. suffers from any mental illness on an annual basis. Yet, less than one-half of these individuals receive treatment annually, highlighting a need to better inform the public about the importance of treatment for mental disorders and improve access to and engagement with mental health care. Come hear Dr. Alison Darcy, CEO of Woebot Labs and Dr. Rob Morris, Co-Founder of Koko discuss how artificial intelligence-assisted chatbots and AI-monitored peer-to-peer networks can be used to improve access to and engagement in mental health care.

Speakers:

Alison Darcy, PhD, is the CEO and Founder of Woebot Labs, a company that aims to make the best psychological tools radically accessible for everyone. She created Woebot, a friendly AI-powered chatbot that delivers cognitive behavior therapy at scale. Woebot has been featured by Wired, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Forbes, the BBC, The Times (London); and the Washington Post. A clinical research psychologist, Alison was Faculty in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford School of Medicine for a decade where she developed digital health interventions for young people. With both a technical and scientific background, Alison works at the intersection of mental health and technology.

Robert Morris is co-founder of Koko, a social network for mental health and emotional well-being.
Robert earned his AB in psychology from Princeton University, summa cum laude, and his master's and PhD in media arts and sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, social computing, and digital interventions for mental health. He is an award winning designer and his work has been featured in Wired, NPR, Fast Company, and the The Huffington Post, among others.

Girish Subramanyan, M.D (Psychiatry) is a psychiatrist who treats, primarily, Mood and Anxiety Disorders in San Francisco, including so-called treatment resistant forms of these conditions. He is also deeply interested in and actively involved with mental health technology. He has advised early stage mental health start-ups, including Spring Health, where he was most recently Chief Clinical Officer, and Kip Health. Currently, he is involved in the development of mental health patient on-boarding and treatment-tracking software as well as a public-service solution for treatment-seeking individuals in San Francisco that provides free mental illness screening and matching to treatment providers.
