This guided outing is meant for those who are serious about learning how to plan and execute their own overnight backcountry trips, so having the necessary preparation and knowledge are important for the safety and enjoyment of all participants.

What equipment do I need in order to participate?

Accepted Answer

Because the goal is to prepare you to do this on your own, you are expected to supply all the necessary riding and camping equipment for overnight backcountry travel. A detailed list will be provided after you make your initial reservation. LIGHTWEIGHT EQUIPMENT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Do you provide horses to ride?

No; participants are expected to bring their own riding horse (and optional pack animal) for the trip.  I do have a pack mule available to carry some additional items, but the instruction focuses on making sure both you and your personal stock gain the necessary experience for independent outings.

Question 4

How much trail riding experience do I need to have?

Accepted Answer

You should feel capable of navigating single-track trails with a variety of terrains, including possible water crossings and uphill/downhill slopes, and comfortable riding at least 4 hours at a time. You also need to be fit enough to complete all necessary camping and stock care tasks.

Question 5

What kind of training or conditioning does my horse need before the trip?

Your riding/packing stock need to be fit to travel at a walking pace for up to 10-12 miles while carrying a rider and/or equipment, with possible elevation gain/loss and water crossings. Part of your pre-trip preparation will include familiarizing stock with overnight containment methods.
