Can my children come with me to volunteer day?

For the safety of volunteers, all participants must be ADULTS 18 and over. Volunteer projects can involve walking on uneven ground, exposure to various plants, and sometimes, proximity to animals. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities for teens, please check our website.

Question 2

What should I bring with me to my volunteer day?

Accepted Answer

Please wear closed toed shoes, long pants, gardening gloves, and sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat, to your volunteer day. Volunteer projects take place outdoors. A water bottle is also recommended.

Will there be parking?

Accepted Answer

Yes, volunteers get free parking for the day. You will receive detailed instructions on where to park in a confirmation email.

Question 4

I have a meeting in the morning. Is it okay if I join late?

Accepted Answer

All participants must arrive by 8:45am. Volunteer groups travel to project locations throughout the zoo, sometimes to behind-the-scenes areas. Due to the nature of volunteer projects, we are not able to accommodate late arrivals.

Can I visit the Zoo after my volunteer project is complete?

Accepted Answer

Yes! You are welcome to enjoy the Zoo after your volunteer project. We are thankful for your help! Zoo parking and admission are free for volunteers on your day of service. When available, you will also be able to get a free train ride.

Question 6

I'm not sure how many people will be able to make it. What do I do?

Accepted Answer

Give us your best estimate. We ask that you provide a full roster two weeks before your volunteer day. Our project leads carefully plan volunteer projects and materials for the number of volunteers we are expecting. Groups with timely and accurate attendance also receive future priority sign-up.
