Grounded Color: Earth Pigment Workshop with Celine Gordon

Grounded Color: Earth Pigment Workshop with Celine Gordon

By The Harwood Art Center

Overview

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll create watercolor paints made from earth pigments.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll create watercolor paints made from earth pigments. Earth pigments are natural colorants derived from rocks, minerals, and soil, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic paints. By using materials directly sourced from our environment, we’ll create a unique palette that captures the essence of the landscapes around us.

We’ll begin with a foraging hike in Placitas to collect rocks and other natural materials. In addition to foraging, we’ll explore a variety of natural resources sourced from across New Mexico. Using a mortar and pestle, we’ll grind these raw materials into fine pigments, transforming them into our own handmade paints. We will use our earth pigment watercolors to learn various watercolor techniques, exploring both abstract and landscape painting styles.
