Event description

Description

A graphic novel is a novel in comic strip form. Novel graphics are images that manage to catch our attention in the middle of the information glut. If you're a writer or illustrator looking to shake up your work with innovative images, layouts, and story forms, this one-day workshop is for you.

We'll be discussing Lynda Barry, Marjorie Satrapi, Mat Johnson, Mark Danielewski, Chris Ware, Tom Phillips, Sophie Calle, and more. We'll look at how they use illustration, obfuscation, and found objects--all layered with (or revealing) text--to create beautiful, whimsical, or disturbing stories--some for the social good; some for the sake of telling a dang good tale.

Other topics include: creating engaging, active characters; developing coherent narrative around those characters; writing a detailed, scene-by-scene story outline; and scripting through page breaks and panel descriptions.

The first half of class will be lecture format; the second will be a hands-on storyboarding workshop. All handouts and materials provided--but bring a sketchbook if you have one!

We will break halfway through class and enjoy light refreshments.
