*This webinar is part of our NYAC Summer Encore Series — a limited-time showcase of archived programs, re-airing exclusively this August*

How did an island in the middle of New York Harbor go from full service military base for the U.S. Army to one of America's most unique public spaces; where cars aren't allowed, people play on 70-foot hills, and stepping inside abandoned buildings is perfectly acceptable? It's time to explore the evolution and transformation of one of New York City's most fascinating islands, and how its main purpose changed from protector of the city to safe haven for its prolific artists.

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the incredible story of Governors Island — a small island in New York Harbor that has been home to everything including Native American fishing camps, Dutch West India Company settlement, British garrison, American Army HQ, Confederate Prison of War, United States Coast Guard installation, and much more.

Led by New York City historian Kevin Draper, our virtual journey to Governors Island will include:

  • A historical overview of Governors Island, and how it acquired its name even though no governors ever lived there
  • A look at several historic American military fortifications including Fort Jay (1794), Castle Williams (1811), and South Battery (1812)
  • A virtual trip around the island to see remnants of its former military community, such as U.S. Army buildings and barracks abandoned in the 1960s (including Liggett Hall, once the world's longest building), Colonel's Row, The Admiral's House in Nolan Park, and The Governor's House (the island's oldest surviving structure, ~1703)
  • An introduction to Governors Island's newest public spaces including The Hills (four man-made hills ranging from 25-70 ft tall), The Play Lawn, and Hammock Grove — and how they play a vital role in protecting Lower Manhattan

See you there, virtually!
