Gondolas & Garbage Goats: A Book Project & Writing Workshop with Spark Central

3 Sessions · Mondays, May 6, 13, and 20 • 5:30 to 7 PM

Teens & Adults · Take a trip down memory lane for the 50th anniversary of Expo ‘74 in this three-session poetry and short prose workshop with local writers Benjamin Van Voorhis and Leah Dawdy. The first two workshop sessions will include discussions about the craft of writing, as well as prompts, readings, and images based around the history of Spokane that will inspire you to create work celebrating the city’s growth and change. In the third meeting of this workshop, edit and refine your writing generated from the earlier prompts alongside other participants with the help of our project leads.

Participants’ final pieces will be published in a professionally-bound book featuring original art. Participation in the first two sessions of this workshop and community event release will be asked of all participants who are able to attend. Registration for this program is free thanks to financial support from Spokane Arts and the City of Spokane. Donations are still welcome via your registration, which supports other Spark Central programming, keeping costs free for our community.

Book project writing workshop dates: 5/6, 5/13, and 5/20 for an optional revision session, all from 5:30 - 7 PM.

FAQs

Do I have to register to come? Yes, you MUST register to come as our registration-based programs have limited spots.

How do I register an adult vs a teen? Register via our Eventbrite page (if you're reading this, then you're in the right spot). If you're registering a teen who's under 18, there will be a question where you can put their name; a "yes" to that question means that registration will count as their registration and not the adult's. If you're registering yourself as an adult, you may answer "no" to that question and continue with the registration.

Can I register if I'm not certain I can attend? Please only register if you know you will be there. We often have a full waitlist for our registered programs. If you or your teen become ill unexpectedly after registering or must miss a session due to other circumstances, please contact programs@spark-central.org.

Can I sign up my teen if they don't want to come? No. Spark Central programs have two rules: (1) Everyone wants to be here; (2) Everyone is compassionate toward others. Registration-based programs are not a spot to bring someone who does not want to participate.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions or if I have to cancel? Contact programs@spark-central.org with questions or cancellations. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can't make it, as our registered programs often have waiting lists and we want to give everyone a chance to participate if possible.
