Global Coalition of Academies of Medicine for COP30 Climate & Health Action
Overview
Climate change represents one of the most profound threats to human health in the 21st century, serving as a threat multiplier for health risks including heat-related morbidity, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, food and water insecurity, the geographic spread of infectious pathogens, and more.
National academies of medicine hold a uniquely influential position at the intersection of science, policy, and public trust. As trusted voices in their respective countries, they are vital in advancing public health priorities and guiding evidence-based policymaking.
The upcoming Belém Health Action Plan, with its strong emphasis on the health dimensions of climate change and implementation, presents a critical opportunity for national academies to collectively affirm the urgent need for action and align their institutions' and nations' work with the Belém Health Action Plan's priorities. By uniting around a shared statement of support for the Belém Health Action Plan, academies can elevate the health framing of the climate crisis, catalyze national-level commitment, and demonstrate the global health community’s resolve to implement climate and health as a worldwide priority.
This webinar will feature representatives from national academies from across the globe who will share climate and health work of their respective academies, including detailed alignment of their work with the Belém HAP, and provide insights into how we can all amplify, implement, and build upon the work and outcomes of COP and the Belém HAP.
