About this event
Are you ready for some great Jiu Jitsu? because we are!
Girls in Gis is a community of women and girls in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that come together through donation based training events. They are hosted, instructed, and attended only by women and girls. It's our time to come together! All ages and skill levels from any academy affiliation are welcome to attend. No experience required. Our events are designed for 100% participation, but do allow chaperones to accompany underage participants as spectators.
Our events are donation based in order to provide equal opportunity to everyone. Your donations provide paid teaching opportunities for our guest instructor(s) and help to expand and make Girls in Gis programs such as our events, our leadership program and instructional training programs and our scholarships possible. If you are not able to make a donation please contact us and we will work with you so that you are able to participate.
You can also purchase a GIG t-shirt, patches and more GIG merchandise with your donation. All orders can be picked up during the event.
GIG Texas - Spring Guest instructors: Emily Bacher Galvao & Julia Wilkinson
Julia Wilkinson is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Professor Daniel Galvão, following in his footsteps as a dedicated instructor. Born in Brazil and now living in Evansville, Indiana, she began her Jiu-Jitsu journey 12 years ago in Houston, where she still maintains strong ties with the local jiujitsu community. While she dabbled in competition, Julia soon discovered her passion lies in teaching—especially in making Jiu-Jitsu clear and accessible for children. Her focus is on creating an environment where young students can build confidence, discipline, and a lifelong love for the art.
Emily Bacher Galvão began her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey in 2014 in the United Arab Emirates, and in 2023 earned her black belt under Professor Daniel Galvão. After returning to the United States, she helped establish Mãozinha BJJ in Spring, Texas, where she currently leads the Women’s Program and teaches youth classes.
An active competitor, Emily has earned podium finishes at prestigious events such as the IBJJF Master Worlds, Pan Americans, Jiu Jitsu Con, and various IBJJF Open tournaments.
She is a strong advocate for the growth of women in jiu-jitsu and co-founded Houston Femme BJJ, a monthly Houston-based open mat created to support and connect women and young girls in the sport.
Emily is also dedicated to working with individuals with special needs, teaching both children and adults. As a mother to a young daughter on the autism spectrum, she is especially passionate about making jiu-jitsu an inclusive and empowering space for all.
