Getting Started with Community Storytelling:

Storytelling is one of the biggest ways we connect with ourselves and others. But how do we tap into storytelling to promote community identity and community development? From sharing neighborhood success stories online, to preserving the histories of local elders, to networking over shared experiences–there are endless methods of caring for our communities through storytelling. Come learn with us how we can actively use storytelling to engage residents, create a sense of local pride, and promote community change-making!

Meet our guest speakers:

Joining our conversation is Dr. Enkeshi El-Amin, Assistant Professor of Sociology at WVU, Founding Director of The Bottom, and Cohost of the Black in Appalachia podcast; Dr. Cicero Fain, Assistant Provost for Inclusive Excellence at Marshall University and author of Black Huntington: A Black Appalachian Story; and Ty Lucas, AmeriCorps VISTA Lead at Step by Step and Champions for Change Fellowship graduate.

During this Community Conversation, we will:

Hear from a variety of storytellers about how they share their communities’ stories to promote community development and pride.
Talk about the different kinds of narratives and active methods of storytelling that can be used to create a sense of identity and engagement in communities.
Brainstorm ideas for how to tap into your local stories of heritage, success, etc., to build connection and growth in your communities!

This virtual event will be from 12 PM - 1 PM on Wednesday January 18th. We will keep the room open for 15 minutes after the event for anyone who would like to continue the conversation.
