Your body has a story to tell, and Dick Jones wants to help you tell it! Returning from hiatus, this class is a safe space to workshop and explore the world of performance art and its relationship with burlesque.
Dick Jones has over a decade of experience in nightlife and performance art, and they will help you find your story and create stage presence through audience engagement, with a focus on connection and stillness.
There will be some discussion of what constitutes performance art, but this is not a lecture class. In this class, you will learn there is strength in vulnerability. We will be collaborative in learning how to bring your feelings and story to the stage in a way that the audience can truly connect with.
This 4-week intensive will culminate in a student showcase at famed nightlife venue The Allways Lounge.
Let's be art together!
Frequently asked questions
The class will consist of 4 weekly 2 hour sessions. This is a workshop with some time set aside to discuss history and theory. The last class session will be a dress rehearsal for our student showcase at The Allways Lounge.
First and foremost, this is a workshop for students to create an act from start to finish. We will discuss concept, costuming, choreography, movement, pacing, etc with a focus on the story and emotions you wish to convey in your performance.
This class is not focused on learning specific elements of dance. We are interested in finding the ways your body likes to move and how to use your body to convey a story. But be prepared for light movement and dress accordingly. Comfortable shoes or shoes you wish to perform in are recommended.
I strive to create a space that is safe for anyone to express their ideas and vulnerabilities safely. Any racism, homophobia, transphobia, SW-phobia, or intolerance of any kind will not be tolerated. My phone or email will always be open and confidential if you feel you are not being respected.
Some exercises will involve practicing eye contact and conveying expression intimately. If this is something that seems intimidating for you, but you are still interested in participating in this class, please reach out and we can discuss and brainstorm ways to make you feel more comfortable.
