Join Virginia Master Naturalist Dr. Scott Barboza on Sunday, November 16th, 2025, at 2 pm for the first in a planned series of geology walks at Sky Meadows State Park. During this two-hour 1.5 mile excursion, you’ll explore outcrops and vistas that reveal the mysterious supercontinent Rodinia, the ancient Grenville Mountains, and the beginning of the story of Virginia. Learn about the engines of plate tectonics and discover how massive collisions and volcanic eruptions gave birth to the oldest rocks in the Commonwealth.

Take in a few stories of the motherland- the birthplace of our rocks - that reveal how life, air, and land have changed since our land's earliest days. He looks forward to sharing with you the amazing birth of a new world as revealed by the rocks and scenic places of Sky Meadows State Park. The program will begin at the Carriage Barn, followed by a walk to various rock outcrops culminating at the Lower Piedmont Overlook. This is a moderate walk with a steep uphill section. In the event of rain, the trip will take place at the same time and place on November 22nd.
