About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

This is a one-way walk, designed to use public transit at each end (or maybe meet your friends). It's free, a chance to assemble for an Oakland exclusive. We'll meet at the Fruitvale BART station just past the two big palm trees, then set out toward historic Foothill Boulevard and into the low gravel hills that are unique to Oakland. We'll go through well-hidden pathways into Oakland's newest creekside park, take a seldom used overpass over I-580 and onto historic MacArthur Boulevard. Along the way I will occasionally discourse briefly on Oakland geology and geomorphology. We will disperse at MacArthur and Maybelle, the entrance to the free Laurel Street Fair (running til 7 pm), where you will be free to roam and make your own way home.

The route includes a long flight of stairs and a total elevation gain of about 150 feet with ups and downs along the way. We will pause and rest a bit in two parks. Ending time is approximate; I set a geologist's pace: stop a lot but cover ground.
