Genetic Networks and Cluster Research

with James Russell

Saturday, September 28, 2019

CGS Classroom  1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

New tools are increasingly available to help in the analysis of autosomal DNA. Turning such information into evidence for brick-wall problems and the confirmation of ancestors requires knowledge of how to group test match data. Topics include:

-In-common-with groups

-DNA circles

-Networking software

Prerequisites:attendees should have a good understanding of basic DNA topics and experience using autosomal test results to analyze genealogical relationships. Having tested with Ancestry DNA would be particularly relevant.

NOTE:This will not be an elementary presentation. Understanding of the material in Chapter 5 “Genealogical Applications for atDNA” in Genetic Genealogy in Practice (Blaine T. Bettinger and Debbie Parker Wayne, Arlington, Va.: National Genealogical Society, 2016) is recommended as minimum preparation.

This talk would, therefore, be a review of certain applications of DNA to genealogical problems

The presentation will assume knowledge of the basics of applying DNA evidence to genealogical problems. If there is interest, a subsequent workshop is contemplated in which participants adapt some of the techniques to their own needs.

James Russell grew up in Connecticut and lives in Berkeley. He has researched ancestors from New England, New York and Central Europe. He administers severalsurname projects for FTDNA and has participated in several CGS-sponsored genealogical events in the Bay Area.

Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited so register early.
