Yaroslav Kravtsov and the Space Trace studio have been developing UGC games on the Roblox platform for over 5 years. During this time, they have gained a wealth of experience: how to start a studio, how to keep it running for years, and how to discover new niches and opportunities.
A few years ago, when the metaverse hype was at its peak, many companies tried to replicate Roblox’s success by launching their own UGC game platforms. Most of those efforts failed because having the technology is not enough. You also need a large audience, ideally tens of millions of players. For example, Fortnite’s UGC journey started slowly but continues to grow. PUBG and GTA VI have also announced UGC support.
UGC in games has existed for many years. We can recall map editors for Doom or mods for Skyrim. But today, the rules are changing. UGC is becoming a viable source of income. What once was a hobby is now turning into a business. In many ways, it is even more sustainable than some other areas of the game industry.
