Game Worker Organising: Unionisation in the Videogames Industry

Game Worker Organising: Unionisation in the Videogames Industry

By The Industrial Workers of the World

Overview

A Talk by Dr. Jamie Woodcock about unionising in the UK’s videogame industry; the largest in Europe.

This November we are hosting Dr Jamie Woodcock, senior lecturer in digital economy at King’s College London.

Jamie is a positive, prominent and popular voice on building worker power in the workplace and in our communities; an award winning author, an activist and an organiser at IWGB Union and UCU.

We are so excited for him to talk about unionising in the UK’s videogame industry; the largest in Europe, with a workforce of an estimated 47,000 and a market value standing at an eye-watering £7.63 billion in 2024.

Despite boasting such financial buoyancy, workers in the sector are subjected to job insecurity, long unpaid hours and inadequate compensation. Workplace cultures present a raft of issues, including a reported 45% of women experiencing bullying or harassment whilst working in games or by being associated with the industry.

We love these Learning Events. They are an open, inclusive space for us all to explore ideas, share knowledge and perspectives. Looking forward to you joining us to do so.
