Course Description:
This 3-day course prepares participants to deliver FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training course. This course prepares instructors to deliver CERT Basic Training, convey the messages and intent of the CERT program, ensure that participants achieve the objectives of CERT Basic Training, and create a comfortable learning environment. Target Audience: CERT Program managers, coordinators, trainers, and volunteers who will be CERT instructors
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of the CERT Basic Training course.
- Demonstrate the ability to present an assigned portion of the course (teach-back).
- Communicate the core values of the program.
- Demonstrate classroom management techniques.
- Demonstrate effective teaching techniques.
- Model appropriate behavior as an instructor.
Prerequisites
- Letter of recommendation from your sponsoring organization
- CERT Basic Training
- IS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100
- IS-200: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response, ICS 200
- IS-700: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
- IS-800: National Response Framework (NRF), An Introduction
All prerequisite documents must be emailed to the State CERT Coordinator, Kayla Thompson, at kayla.thompson@oem.oregon.gov by January 8, 2026. Preference will be given to Oregon CERT volunteers.
Attendance:
Per FEMA standards, no more than 10% absenteeism is allowed to receive a certificate of completion.
