About Steve Katz

Steve Katz is the assistant dean for advancement at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. He previously served for nearly two decades as fundraising lead and publisher at the nonprofit Mother Jones. Through the Institute for Nonprofit News, Steve advises nonprofit news leaders on organizational strategy, fundraising campaigns and approaches to diversifying revenue, as well as leadership and board development. He’s led fundraising efforts in nonprofit theater, community organizing and affordable housing, environmental advocacy, and in nonprofit news and journalism education. Steve earned a PhD in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, which informs his strategic approach to nonprofit development and organizational leadership. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife Rachelle and a fish named Bob.
