If you’ve always wanted to learn how to use a compass to get from one place to another, this workshop is for you! A simple progression of skills will teach you how to use a compass to find a bearing (direction) and travel towards that bearing. Then we’ll add a map of the Glade Run campus to learn how to use a compass to get from where you are to where you want to go. We’ll finish with a map and compass scavenger hunt around the Glade Run campus!
Learning to find your way around using nothing but a simple non-electronic device and your own knowledge and awareness helps provide a sense of confidence and being “at home” in nature - plus it’s FUN! Map and compass skills can help with hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing, and there’s even a sport of Orienteering with a local Western PA club!
This activity is ideal for adults, teens, and kids 10 and up, who can be on their feet for about an hour and a half and walk about a half a mile over that time. No map and compass experience or “sense of direction” are necessary, but patience, attention to detail, and basic ease with numbers and markings are helpful. Compasses to borrow for the day will be provided.
A minimum of 7 paying participants is needed for this event to be held, registered by Saturday, September 13. Late registrations (within one week of the event) can be made as long as the event has met the minimum number of participants.
