<p>GraphQL is designed for a mobile-first / cloud-first world and specifies how to expose modern APIs. GraphQL, since its inception, has been rapidly growing and is now the go-to solution for new APIs. The largest internet companies in the world like Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, and GitHub are all running on top GraphQL. Become part of this next shift in technology and learn why GraphQL has become so popular with companies of all sizes. In this workshop, we will introduce you to GraphQL and the major concepts behind it. We will look at how to build a GraphQL server with ASP.NET Core 7 and Hot Chocolate. You will learn how to query GraphQL and what tools are out there that can help you explore and manage large schemas. Further, we will dive into React and explore how to efficiently build fast and fluent web interfaces using the JavaScript client Relay.</p>

Day 1

In this module, we will provide a comprehensive introduction to GraphQL, including its origins, underlying concepts, and benefits. We will cover the problems that GraphQL was designed to solve, such as over-fetching and under-fetching of data, and explain how its flexible and declarative nature enables efficient data fetching and client-server communication. Additionally, we will examine the key components of a GraphQL API, including schemas, queries, mutations, and subscriptions, and discuss the role that they play in defining and manipulating data. By the end of this session, attendees will have a deep understanding of what GraphQL is, why it was created, and how it can be used to build powerful and scalable APIs.

What is GraphQL?

BREAK (15 minutes)

In this module, we will cover essential building blocks for creating efficient and scalable GraphQL APIs. Topics include pagination, DataLoader, global object identification, field middleware, and sorting/filtering capabilities. We will also examine GraphQL patterns used by industry leaders like Facebook and Twitter to improve performance and scalability. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of these fundamental concepts and patterns, and learn how to implement them effectively in their own applications.

Foundational Concepts and Patterns

BREAK (60 minutes)

In this module of the workshop, we will explore how to optimize data fetching in React applications using RelayJS and GraphQL. We will cover topics such as specifying the data requirements of a component, composing fragments into queries, and implementing data masking to prevent unnecessary data loading. We will also discuss data flow and rendering lists, pagination, sorting, and filtering. Through hands-on exercises and examples, attendees will learn how to use RelayJS to efficiently retrieve and manage data, reduce network traffic, and improve overall application performance. By the end of this module, participants will have a thorough understanding of how RelayJS and GraphQL can be used together to build highly scalable and performant React applications.

Efficient Data Fetching with RelayJS

In this hands-on module, we will explore how to integrate existing infrastructure, such as REST services, into your GraphQL API. We will focus on leveraging the power of GraphQL to seamlessly incorporate these services into your API. Attendees will learn how to incorporate REST services into their GraphQL API in a way that maximizes efficiency and minimizes cost. By the end of this module, participants will have gained practical experience in integrating existing infrastructure into their GraphQL API, allowing them to leverage the power of GraphQL without the need for a costly rewrite.

Leveraging GraphQL to Incorporate Existing Infrastructure

In this follow-up module on RelayJS, we will cover advanced techniques for optimizing data rendering, transitions, and composability in React applications. We will explore advanced rendering techniques using Relay's fragment container and pagination container, handling transitions and animations in Relay-powered applications, and best practices for composing Relay containers at scale. Attendees will learn how to use Relay's powerful composability features to build highly reusable and maintainable components for complex user interfaces. Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, participants will gain practical experience in building sophisticated Relay-powered applications for optimal user experience and performance. By the end of this module, attendees will be well-equipped with advanced RelayJS techniques and best practices to build highly performant React applications.

Composing at Scale with RelayJS

Day 2

In this module, we will explore how to design and implement GraphQL mutations that adhere to best practices and provide a great user experience. Attendees will learn how to define mutation types, handle input validation and error handling, optimize mutation performance, and handle optimistic updates through practical examples and hands-on exercises. By the end of this module, participants will have gained a solid understanding of GraphQL mutations and will be equipped with the knowledge to design and implement mutations that meet their business needs with confidence.

Mastering GraphQL Mutations

In this module, we will explore how to add real-time data to your GraphQL API with subscriptions. Subscriptions allow you to receive live updates from the server as data changes, making it an essential tool for building dynamic applications. Through practical examples and hands-on exercises, participants will gain a solid understanding of GraphQL subscriptions and will be equipped to design and implement subscriptions that meet their business needs. By the end of this module, attendees will have the skills necessary to build live updates into their GraphQL API and create dynamic applications that provide real-time data updates.

Real-Time Data with GraphQL Subscriptions

In this module, we will explore how to build distributed GraphQL APIs using Hot Chocolate's Fusion Gateway. Attendees will learn how to seamlessly integrate multiple GraphQL APIs into a single cohesive API, and cover performance and error handling in a distributed environment through practical examples and hands-on exercises. By the end of this unit, participants will have gained a solid understanding of how to build and manage distributed GraphQL APIs using Hot Chocolate's Fusion Gateway. They will be equipped with the knowledge to implement these APIs in their own projects, and to distribute their data and services across multiple systems in a seamless and efficient manner.

Building Distributed GraphQL APIs

 BREAK (15 minutes)

In this module, we will dive deeper into GraphQL client concepts to build scalable and high-performing client applications. Attendees will learn how to use Relay Developer Tools to inspect queries and cache behavior, as well as explore advanced concepts such as type emission, client schema extensions, and persisted queries to optimize client performance, reduce network traffic, and ensure secure communication between the server and client. Through practical examples and hands-on exercises, participants will gain a solid understanding of how to leverage these advanced GraphQL client concepts to build sophisticated client applications with GraphQL. We will also cover best practices on testing client components to ensure application stability and performance.

Advanced GraphQL Client Concepts

In this module, we will explore best practices and common vulnerabilities in securing GraphQL APIs. Attendees will learn how to implement authentication and authorization for GraphQL APIs, and how to prevent common security threats. Through practical examples and hands-on exercises, participants will gain a solid understanding of how to design and implement secure GraphQL APIs. We will cover topics such as how to use JWTs for authentication, implementing rate-limiting and input validation, and how to properly handle errors and exceptions. By the end of this module, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to secure GraphQL APIs against common vulnerabilities and attacks. They will also understand how to design and implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms to protect sensitive data in their GraphQL APIs.
