For the past five years, Save the Boards has carefully preserved hundreds of plywood boards painted by community members, artists, and activists during the movement for racial justice. Now, we’re calling on local businesses, schools, libraries, and community spaces to help us bring this art back into public view, where it belongs.“Uprising to Uplifting” is a call to action: an invitation to learn about the history of this movement, reflect on its ongoing impact, and explore how your space can become part of preserving and amplifying this collective memory.
Local business owners, organizational leaders, and other public space community members are invited to hear from Kenda Zellner-Smith, founder of Save the Boards, to learn how to become a steward of a resistance board or boards which can be displayed in their own their spaces. Each board has the power to continue to speak, teach and inspire.
On Tuesday June 17, attendees at the All Square event will be able to view the digital archieve and select protest art they are interested in re-homing. Details on logistics will be shared at the event.
This event is free and open to the public for those considering safeguarding a plywood board or boards. These temporary artworks were created in response to pain and trauma, yet their messages surpass their ephemeral quality. From images of hope to words of hopelessness, and portraits of George Floyd, the visceral response remains real and a call to action.
